Gen Xers on Academic Careers

The Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education has a new study that says that Gen X faculty (1964-1980) want to work 40 hours a week. They value efficiency.

Read the study for yourself.

Does it match who you are or what you know?

Note: Yesterday evening as I went to bed I realized I “work” 26 hours a week and make $24,000 a year, with benefits. I wondered if I really wanted a full-time job where I had to work on campus forty hours a week and had ten hours of driving time instead of six. But when I woke up this morning, I realized that I already work 40 hours (or more) a week. I just do a lot more of it at home, because that’s where I grade papers since I don’t have an office.
