Poetry Workshop: Mind the Selfish Reader

Rebecca Balcárcel, author of Palabras in Each Fist, was on my campus on Thursday. These are notes from her poetry workshop.

Mind the selfish reader.
The reader wants to learn about him/herself, not the author.

Adding significance for the selfish reader (for revisions)
Apply So What? test
provide an insight
show a different angle
make a point

Talked about a writer who did a memoir and then applied the so what test and found that the book wasn’t well done. Had to rewrite/revise hundreds of pages.
