CALL FOR PAPERS: Evil Incarnate: Manifestations of Villains and Villainy Publication

This publication takes up the question from the July “Evil Incarnate: Manifestations of Villains and Villainy” conference’s final keynote speaker: is there any use in using the concept of evil in cultural, psychological, or other secular evaluations of the world and its productions, and if there is, what is it? This interdisciplinary project seeks papers that take a stand on evil, either exploring it as a linguistic/theoretical concept or looking at the pragmatism of evil as an evaluative tool in everyday moral/ethical situations. We are interested in both interdisciplinary papers that engage with the issue of evil and disciplinary papers that are clearly articulated for an interdisciplinary audience. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
• Villains and crime in literature and /or fiction
• Villains and monsters in the media/ media constructions of villainy
• Moral transgression, evil, and villainy
• The making of national enemies
• Evil and history
• Evil as a necessity
• Monsters across cultures
• What causes evil
• Aliens and alienation
• Supernatural evil and the Occult
• Political villains such as dictators, tyrants, Fascists, and/or Nazis
• Terrorists
• Criminality in society
• Holocausts
Please send a 10-page draft of the paper with a 1-2 page accompanying outline for the draft’s extension to 6000 words to evilincarnate_at_case.edu by November 15, 2014. The submission should also include a 100-word biographical note (NOT A CV).
