What I’ve foolishly been looking forward to

out of the seven college classes I am slated to teach was the literature course. It was an honors course and thus implies in its name students who love literature or at least are educationally prepared for a challenge. I was looking forward to it, sifting through the literature in the anthology the school assigns, searching for ways to make the class a step outside the student and into literature. But that class isn’t going to make. There is only one student and twenty-four empty slots.

At best I will be teaching a literature course in the evening once a week.

But I am still thinking of that honors course, planning for it, trying to see what I could do to make the course more enjoyable, more enriching, more exuberant. I guess I can apply the same plans, with minor modifications, to the literature course.
